Proper Care of Your Septic System

Use less water, reduce the work on the septic system. Also, try to even out the timing of water consumption. Examples, do laundry throughout the week instead of all at once; use flow reducer nozzles on showers; install water-conserving commodes.

Keep trees at least 100 feet away from the septic system. Trees with aggressive roots, such as willows, should be planted even farther way. Tree roots can ruin a septic system.

Design drainage, landscape, downspouts, and foundation drains to divert excess water away from the septic system so the drainage field does not overfill.

Never flush/drain solids- kitty litter, disposable diapers, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, facial tissues, coffee grounds, cigarette butts, or anything similar. They will quickly fill and clog your septic tank. Additionally, the use of heave, thick toilet tissue is not recommended for septic systems. Garbage disposals will double the amount of solids in a septic tank. Purchase high-horsepower, top quality disposals.

Do not overuse heavy cleaners, especially those counting bleach. They kill bacteria that help decompose solids in the septic tanks.

Don't pour grease down he drain. ON top of other issues, it can clog your drain field-an expensive septic system repair.

Don't flush/drain hazardous chemicals. They harm your septic system and will eventually end up in the ground water.

Don't drive over the drain field, or cover it with concrete, asphalt, a structure or swimming pool... Use a quality enzyme product for proper bacteria formation.

Tank Alarm Inspections

If your septic tank alarm is continuously going off, you should call us as soon as possible. Neglecting the alarm could result in your home being flooded with sewage.

Here are some reasons for your alarm to go off:

Pump
Your septic tank pumps last about 10-12 years on average. Once it fails, waste water will stop being moved to the drain field and the alarm will go off. Obviously, you will need to get this fixed as soon as possible.

Rain
Heavy rainfall in your area may cause the tank to accumulate water. The extra work moving this water may be more than your pump can handle. The alarm will go off to alert you to the problem. If this is the reason, the alarm should stop once the excess water has had time to drain.

Power
Most pumps are electric, so power outages will stop the pump from functioning. Once the power is restored and the pump had time to normalize, the alarm will stop.

Pipes
The pipe that moves waste water to the drain field can get clogged or damaged, setting off the alarm. The pipe can get clogged up due to scum buildup, excess water, or various other reasons.

Tank
Although the wastewater gets pumped into the drain field, the solids accumulate in your tank and need routine pumping. If your tank is overdue for pumping, the alarm will go off.

Only a certified septic service technician can find the true source of your alarm going off. While spending the money for a sudden service call is unwelcome, the results of sewage overflow is much more unwelcome.
